A group of owls is known as a parliament, and in an African setting, owls are always associated with a bad omen across the content in different cultures. Therefore, the book Parliament of Owls speaks for itself, telling you beforehand that this bird group has nothing good to offer but trouble.

What is the story of the Parliament of Owls?

The book is set in the bird kingdom ruled by owls, especially through the powerful Parliament of Owls and the Royal Trees. The king of this kingdom is known as King Tula Nyongoro, the Royal Owl, who rules with an iron arm.

The king's best friend, Money Bags Owl, follows suit and becomes corrupt, grabbing several trees for himself. At the same time, Socialite Owl, backed by Money Bags Owl, misuses her role in parliament to pass silly laws that favour them.

This leads to a rebellion led by Iron Lady Owl, with support from different birds like Day Birds and Grain Eaters, all rallying behind Oyundi the Fire-finch.

The narrative delves into the dysfunctional workings of the parliament of owls, where the bills are hastily passed to favour owl interests, suppressing dissenting voices like Iron Lady Owl. Oyundi, observing the chaos, orchestrates a plan to replace the parliament with a more inclusive government, discovering a crucial secret in the Royal Trees, The Golden Bead.

Meanwhile, Veteran P, leading the parrots, reports on the events that led to Arum Tidie's death. The death of the owls' chief propagandist, Arum Tidie, fuels the momentum for change, culminating in Oyundi's strategic manoeuvre to overthrow the rule of the Royal Owl.

Parliament of Owls analysis

What is the novel Parliament of Owls about? The popular set book satirises poor leadership, tribalism, and corruption, showing how they hinder societal progress. It also demonstrates that marginalised individuals, like Oyundi the Fire-finch, can spark change peacefully.

Importantly, it encourages youths and Kenyans to engage in civic awareness and drive positive change. There are several themes arising from the play, such as:

1. Corruption and abuse of power (dictatorship)

The play depicts a society where corruption runs rampant, particularly within the Parliament of Owls. Characters like Money Bags Owl exploit their positions for personal gain, grabbing territory and sponsoring frivolous bills. This theme highlights the negative consequences of unchecked power and greed.

Power is also abused when the leaders in the book use dictatorship to get what they need from the commoners. Commoners feel insecure about their future and safety, knowing they are at the mercy of the owl-dominated Parliament of Owls.

2. Love

The author of this book tackles the theme of love from all angles, whereby there is a twist of laughter, lies and illusion. Throughout the story, there is a sense of companionship and solidarity among the rebel birds and their supporters. Some characters, like Iron Lady Owl and Oyundi the Fire-finch, demonstrate a deep love for justice and fairness.

Love is also explored through themes of conflict and betrayal. The corrupt actions of characters like Money Bags Owl and Socialite Owl reveal a betrayal of trust and a lack of love for their fellow birds.

3. Favoritism

This theme is evident in the kingdom's unequal treatment of different bird species. Those in power like Money Bags Owl and Socialite Owl, show favouritism towards their kind, passing laws and making decisions that benefit owls at the expense of other birds.

4. Oppression and rebellion

Oppression is a central theme, as the corrupt governance of the owls suppresses dissenting voices and exploits other bird species. However, this oppression sparks rebellion among the oppressed, led by characters like Iron Lady Owl and supported by a coalition of birds seeking change. The narrative explores the dynamics of resistance against unjust authority.

5. Political satire and critique

The play critiques real-world political systems through its satirical lens, highlighting issues such as bad governance, tribalism, and corruption. By exaggerating and parodying these issues, the narrative encourages reflection and discussion on governance and leadership.

6. Equality

A contrasting theme emerges through the rebellion led by characters like Oyundi the Fire-finch, who advocates for a more inclusive government. The narrative champions equality and inclusivity, suggesting that all birds should have a voice in governance, regardless of species or status. This theme stirs hope in a situation that seems difficult to many.

Interview with a veteran actor

In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, veteran actor and Theatrix Arts Ensemble Managing Director Alliwah David HSc, who is also the prosecutor on the iconic comedy series Vioja Mahakamani, delves into the role of satirical set books in society. He also opens up about how he uses performance to convey their messages effectively.

Q: In your experience as a veteran set book performer, how do students typically respond to the symbolic depth and themes in set books, and how does this influence their understanding of the content?

From my perspective, student responses to the symbolic depth and themes are quite varied, and this has an impact on their understanding. Many students often approach set books at a surface level, focusing on plot and character actions. They might see the characters simply as people in a story, rather than as representations of human conditions.

We have several highlighted issues that influence their understanding of symbolic depth, such as enhancing comprehension. Here, students are able to grasp the nuances and complexities of the narrative.

Q: From a performer's point of view, how do you ensure that you bring the characters to life in a set book such as Parliament of Owls, so that students connect emotionally and intellectually?

When bringing characters to life in a set book like Parliament of Owls, we foster both emotional and intellectual connection with students. This requires a blend of performance techniques and deep textual understanding. Here's my approach:

By understanding the core character’s role in the play. What are their motivations, desires, fears, and conflicts? How do they contribute to the overall themes of the play?

You must vary pitch, tone, and volume to reflect the character's emotional state. A character who is angry might have a higher pitch and louder volume, while a character who is sad might speak in a lower, softer tone.

Physicality and body language: Like posture and Stance, gesture and movement, eye contact and facial expressions.

Emotional connection: like empathy, emotional recall, subtextual exploration and relatability

Intellectual engagement: Here we have Character Arc, thematic significance, symbolic representation and encourage discussion.

Q: In your personal view as a performer, why is it important for set books to tackle issues like institutional failure and personal integrity?

As a performer, I find that set books that tackle issues like institutional failure and personal integrity are incredibly important for several reasons, like their relevance, catalyst for discussion, emotional engagement, exploration of the human condition, social commentary and timelessness.

Q: Do you think that literature like Parliament of Owls can inspire real social change, or does it just provoke more thought than action?

This novel encourages readers to question leadership, recognize injustices, and imagine alternative futures. It fosters civic consciousness, which can lead to activism, policy discussions, and even shifts in governance. However, the transition from thought to action depends on how deeply readers engage with the themes and whether they translate their insights into real-world initiatives.

Literature has the power to sow the seeds of mobilizing people by influencing the mind and the heart. However, for the actions to be tangible actions, they always need resources, political opportunity and a clear pathway for collective effort. Works by renowned authors like Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, Chinua Achebe, and Wole Soyinka are among influential writers who were able to mobilize minds behind their lethal literary writings.

Q: How has your experience been on the stage while performing such setbooks and do you feel you have achieved your goal?

As a seasoned actor for the last 25 years and having run and directed a group for the last 21 years, I can say it has been great so far so good. The rush of stepping onto the stage, the thrill of bringing characters to life, and the satisfaction of seeing an audience truly connect with a performance. The power of setbook performances by putting words on a page into living, breathing stories, making themes more relatable and memorable for students. If done well, it can inspire critical thinking and deeper engagement with the text.

It is why I’m still doing this. Having seen thousands of students and teachers through my team, Theatrix Arts Ensemble, over the years give out positive testimonies, has inspired me and given us relevance to date.
