The Council of Ulama in Nigeria has urged Nigerians not to sell their votes in the 2027 general elections, warning that electing bad leaders could worsen the country’s problems.
The council urged voters to choose credible candidates based on character, competence, and past performance rather than money or personal interests.
The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued after its annual meeting held at the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) conference hall in Kawo, Kaduna, on October 17.
The communiqué was signed by Professor Muhammad Sadiq Abubakar, Secretary-General of the Council of Ulama in Nigeria.
The scholars urged Nigerians to carefully assess candidates before voting, stating that the decisions made at the polls would affect their lives and the future of the nation.
“The council calls on Nigerians to come out and vote for leaders whose integrity, good character, and competence they have established based on their past records,” the communiqué stated.
It added: “Nigerians should not engage in money politics. Whoever gives them money should be allowed to do so, but they should vote for the right candidate because the money belongs to the people in the first place.”
The council also called on political parties to respect electoral laws and conduct their activities peacefully, warning against actions that could trigger violence or unrest.
It urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free, fair, and credible elections and to take measures to prevent anything that could compromise the polls.
The scholars added that political parties and their supporters should accept the outcome of a credible election and allow whoever emerges victorious through a transparent process to govern.
The council expressed concern over the country’s security and economic challenges, emphasizing that Nigeria needs leaders who prioritize the welfare of the people.
It called on the government to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity, support farmers, and reduce the cost of living to ease the hardship faced by citizens.
The council stressed that respect for the rule of law and the conduct of credible elections are essential for justice, peace, and national development.
