Police said on 22 October that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has given the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Operational Safety Training Unit training and medical gear worth more than SBD $430,000 (approximately AUD $77,000). The handover was held at the RSIPF Tactical Training Centre.
The donation was made through the RSIPF and AFP Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP). Police said the equipment would be used for recruit training and for the recertification of serving officers around Solomon Islands, and would also support the RSIPF Operational Safety Assessment framework.
Among the items are training batons, handcuffs, training weapons and sparring suits, along with first aid and trauma kits and an automated external defibrillator that police said would help instructors deal with emergencies during practical exercises.
AFP RAPPP Advisor James Richardson said the gear would help RSIPF officers develop professionally. "This donation reflects the AFP's ongoing commitment to supporting the professional development of RSIPF officers and strengthening frontline policing capability throughout Solomon Islands," Mr Richardson said.
RSIPF OST Officer-in-Charge Inspector Johnny Niabo said the equipment would improve practical training for both recruits and serving officers and thanked the AFP for its support through RAPPP. "This equipment will strengthen practical OST delivery for recruits and serving officers, helping them maintain the skills and confidence to perform their duties safely and professionally," Inspector Niabo said.
Police said operational safety training prepares officers to handle operational situations safely, keeping up the practical skills needed to respond to difficult incidents and to reduce risks to themselves and to the public.
