The Tampa Bay Rays responded to a tough Game 1 loss with a strong pitching performance Tuesday night, defeating the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 to even the American League Championship Series at one game apiece.
Freddy Peralta delivered six scoreless innings, while Liam Hicks provided the biggest offensive moment with a two run single as Tampa Bay protected its home field and regained momentum in the best-of-seven series.
Peralta Dominates on the Mound
Peralta was outstanding for Tampa Bay, limiting Cleveland to four hits across six innings. He struck out six batters and walked two, keeping the Guardians off the scoreboard while working through several important situations.
The right hander continued an impressive stretch of pitching, allowing one or fewer earned runs in eight consecutive outings. His ability to control the game early gave the Rays’ offense time to create separation.
Cleveland threatened at times, but Peralta consistently found ways to escape trouble. His performance set the tone for a Tampa Bay team determined to respond after surrendering a late lead in Monday’s series opener.
Hicks Delivers the Big Hit
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when a Cleveland defensive mistake opened the door for Tampa Bay.
José Ramírez misplayed a routine ground ball, allowing Victor Mesa Jr. to score the game’s first run. Hicks followed with a two-run single, bringing home Chandler Simpson and Ben Williamson to give the Rays a 3-0 advantage.
The three-run inning proved to be enough for Tampa Bay.
Cleveland finally got on the board in the seventh when rookie Chase DeLauter doubled home a run. However, Ian Seymour escaped further trouble by striking out Jo Adell with runners on second and third.
Rays Even the Series
Tampa Bay’s bullpen finished the job. Seymour handled the eighth inning before closer Bryan Baker retired the side in the ninth to secure the victory.
The 3-1 win evened the ALCS at 1-1 and prevented Cleveland from taking a commanding series lead.
The teams now head to Cleveland for Game 3 on Thursday, with both clubs looking to seize control of the series.
After a frustrating opener, the Rays delivered the response they needed. Peralta’s dominant outing and Hicks’ timely hitting showed that Tampa Bay remains firmly in the fight for a World Series berth.
