After what Paul Hollywood called “the worst technical” he’d seen in 17 years of the show, here’s who left Bake Off during Bread Week.
It was an episode of the Great British Bake Off for the history books - and not in a good way.
It was Bread Week in the tent last night (Tuesday, October 13), with the “Breadfather” himself Paul Hollywood at the helm of each challenge - including the disastrous flatbread technical. After seeing the results of his scant instructions and hour-long time limit, Hollywood said it was “probably the worst technical I think I’ve ever seen in 17 years”.
For the signature challenge, the bakers were asked for their take on garlic bread, with the showstopper a special holiday display using enriched dough.
Nikki had to step away from the tent just after the signature, with host Alison Hammond sharing it was due to “family matters”. The episode then ended with a photo tribute to the baker’s mum Joyce who passed away during filming. The message read: “Our deepest condolences to Nikki and family following the loss of her mum Joyce.”
While it was a rough week overall, who was good enough to stand out from the crowd and who didn’t manage to rise to the occasion?
Who won Star Baker?
Earning the title for a second time during Bread Week, it was Tom who was named Star Baker.
His Chelsea bun garlic bread was mostly approved by the judges, though they recommended some slight tweaks which he carried over to the showstopper which also included Chelsea buns. Tom only came fourth in the technical, but his creations - though raw - were uniform.
As for the showstopper, his Christmas-themed gonk featuring multiple types of bread impressed both visually and taste-wise. Nigella Lawson praised the display, and Hollywood mostly approved - though he did take some issue with the overall texture, which he found slightly too cakey.
That being said, the only other baker who was close to earning Star Baker was last week’s champion Clara.
Who left Bake Off last night?
Unfortunately, it was Molly who left Bake Off last night.

The red headed baker immediately started to reassure her fellow bakers as soon as her name was announced, sharing that she “knew” it would be her.
Her garlic bread signature was underproved and lacking in flavour, and she came in seventh during the technical. Her showstopper babka which featured pumpkin was also not punchy enough for the judges tastes.
Following the decision, Molly said: "I'm sad to be leaving the tent but it think it's my time, it's the right decision.
"I wanted to do Biscuit Week and Bread Week, and I got to do both. It's been a really wonderful experience and I'm really proud of myself."
She wasn’t the only baker at risk, with Yannis also coming very close to the bottom.
