The Tamil Desiya Periyakkam has urged the State government to ensure that traders and businessmen complied with the recent Madras High Court order relating to display of name boards in Tamil.
In a statement on October 19, TDP general secretary K. Venkatraman said on July 24, the Madras High Court ordered that the shops/business establishments should display their respective establishment’s name in Tamil before November 1.
Though the government orders in this regard were issued on December 12, 1983 and December 29, 1984, the fiat was seldom complied with by the traders/businessmen/business houses.
The G.O. categorically mention that the boards should contain the shops/business establishments names in Tamil first followed by in English and any other language third. The G.O. stipulated that the font size of Tamil should be larger, the second language a bit smaller and the third language smaller in size, Mr. Venkatraman said.
However, although three decades have passed the name boards had not been put up in Tamil by several shops/establishments. These boards still display English words such as jewellery, restaurant, and others in Tamil script rather than in pure Tamil such as ‘nagai vanigam’, ‘unavagam’ and so on.
What was ironical was that the list of such pure Tamil words corresponding to such English words had been released by the government along with the G.O., which mentions first time fine and other legal actions for subsequent violations.
Alleging that the various government departments that were to ensure proper compliance of these G.O. have failed to take action, the TDP called upon the present government to implement the two Government Orders in toto as per the Madras High Court order, the statement added.
