Zimbabwe Motorists Start Receiving Traffic Fine Notifications As 4.8 Million Violations Are Captured
Zimbabwean motorists have started receiving mobile phone notifications for traffic offences recorded by AI-powered smart cameras, with authorities reporting that 4.8 million violations have been captured. The system also allows drivers to check outstanding fines online, but police have issued an important warning about how payments should be made.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed on 17 October 2026 that the Smart Traffic Management System (STMS) was operational in selected central business districts. By 18 October, motorists had started receiving notifications containing video clips of alleged offences and details of the fines.
How Zimbabwe’s Smart Traffic Cameras Work
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the system was designed to improve road safety, reduce congestion and strengthen enforcement of traffic laws.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police advises members of the public that the Smart Traffic Management System (STMS) is now fully functional and operational in selected central business districts (CBDs) across the country.”
The cameras can detect offences including speeding, running red lights, using mobile phones while driving, failing to wear seatbelts and picking up passengers at undesignated locations.
Motorists receive a notification on their phones with a link to view the recorded violation. Those caught running red lights may face court proceedings rather than simply paying a fine.
ZRP Issues Warning Over Traffic Fine Payments
Nyathi warned motorists against dealing with unauthorised agents collecting fines on behalf of the police.
He directed motorists to check violations and outstanding deposit fines through the official platforms:
Motorists can also seek assistance at designated police stations in Harare, including Harare Central Traffic, Warren Park Traffic, Avondale Traffic, Milton Park, Marlborough, Malbereign, Mbare Traffic and Chitungwiza Traffic.
The police also urged vehicle owners to ensure their registration records reflect the current owner, warning that outdated records could leave them liable for offences committed after a vehicle changes hands.
The rollout forms part of Zimbabwe’s wider digital policing drive. President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to commission the project’s first phase.
