Ronaldo surpasses $2 billion in career earnings

Cristiano Ronaldo has reached another historic financial milestone, becoming the first active athlete to surpass $2 billion in career earnings, according to Forbes, while maintaining his position as the world’s highest-paid footballer.

The 41-year-old Portuguese forward, who plays for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, is estimated to earn $300 million during the 2026-27 season, placing him comfortably ahead of longtime rival Lionel Messi, who occupies second position with projected earnings of $145 million. Blueprint reports

Forbes estimates that Ronaldo will receive approximately $250 million from his football contract with Al Nassr, with a further $50 million expected from endorsements, licensing, business ventures and other commercial activities.

The milestone underlines how Ronaldo has transformed his success on the pitch into a global commercial enterprise, combining football salaries with sponsorship agreements, personal branding and investments.

According to Forbes, Ronaldo’s total career earnings have reached approximately $2.1 billion before taxes and agents’ fees. His achievement extends beyond the annual football earnings rankings and places him among a select group of athletes whose financial influence has continued to grow throughout their sporting careers.

Ronaldo’s earnings extend beyond football

Ronaldo’s financial success has been driven in large part by his extraordinary earning power in professional football, particularly since his move to Saudi Arabia in 2023.

His contract with Al Nassr has helped establish a financial benchmark in the sport, with the club’s reported commitment accounting for the largest portion of his projected $300 million earnings for the 2026-27 season.

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward has also built a substantial commercial profile through his CR7 brand, endorsements and investments.

His business interests and commercial partnerships have allowed him to generate income beyond his playing contract, illustrating the growing importance of personal branding in modern sport.

Ronaldo’s social media reach has further strengthened his appeal to international brands seeking access to a global audience. His commercial value is linked not only to his performances but also to his worldwide recognition and long-standing presence at the highest level of football.

Forbes’ career earnings calculation covers income generated on and off the field over time. It is measured before taxes and agents’ fees and should not be confused with an athlete’s net worth, which reflects assets and liabilities rather than the total amount earned throughout a career.

Forbes estimates Ronaldo’s net worth at approximately $1.2 billion, a separate measure from his career earnings.

Messi remains second as Mbappe completes top three

Messi ranks second on the 2026 list with projected earnings of $145 million.

The Argentine captain, who plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, is expected to earn approximately $70 million from his playing activities, with another $75 million coming from endorsements and other commercial ventures.

Although Messi earns considerably less than Ronaldo overall, his off-field income is estimated to be higher than that of his Portuguese rival. His commercial portfolio includes long-standing relationships with major global brands and business arrangements associated with his move to the United States.

Forbes has also projected that Messi could cross the $2 billion career earnings threshold over the coming year, placing him within reach of the milestone already achieved by Ronaldo.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe occupies third place with estimated earnings of $100 million, comprising income from his playing contract and commercial activities.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland follows in fourth position with $85 million, while Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior completes the top five with $76 million.

The figures illustrate the financial strength of football’s leading stars, particularly players whose performances, international profiles and commercial appeal attract substantial contracts and sponsorships.

Yamal leads football’s emerging commercial generation

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal is among the most notable names on the list, ranking sixth with projected earnings of $55 million.

The young Spain international has rapidly developed into one of football’s most recognisable emerging stars. His growing profile has attracted commercial partnerships, while his performances for club and country have strengthened his reputation in the global game.

His position among the world’s highest-paid footballers highlights how quickly young players can build commercial value when sporting achievements are matched by international exposure.

Yamal is followed by Sadio Mane, who ranks seventh with $54 million, while Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham occupies eighth place with $45 million.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is ninth with $42 million, and Mohamed Salah completes the top 10 with projected earnings of $40 million.

The presence of Yamal, Mbappe, Haaland, Vinicius and Bellingham reflects the increasing earning power of a younger generation expected to shape football’s sporting and commercial landscape in the years ahead.

Forbes’ top 10 highest-paid footballers in 2026

According to Forbes’ estimates for the 2026-27 season, the ranking is as follows:

Cristiano Ronaldo, Al Nassr – $300 million
Lionel Messi, Inter Miami – $145 million
Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid – $100 million
Erling Haaland, Manchester City – $85 million
Vinicius Junior, Real Madrid – $76 million
Lamine Yamal, Barcelona – $55 million
Sadio Mane, Al Nassr – $54 million
Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid – $45 million
Harry Kane, Bayern Munich – $42 million
Mohamed Salah, Trabzonspor – $40 million
The combined projected earnings of the 10 players amount to approximately $942 million, demonstrating the extraordinary concentration of commercial and playing income among football’s biggest names.

How Forbes calculates the figures

Forbes’ ranking combines estimated on-field and off-field income.

On-field earnings include salaries, bonuses and, in certain cases, image-rights agreements linked to players’ clubs. Off-field estimates cover income from endorsements, licensing, appearances, memorabilia and returns from businesses in which players have significant interests.

The figures are estimates based on publicly available financial information and discussions with industry sources. They are calculated before taxes and agents’ fees, and do not represent confirmed take-home pay.

For Messi, whose club competes on the American football calendar, Forbes uses his estimated compensation for 2026, while the other players’ on-field earnings largely reflect the 2026-27 season.

Investment income such as interest and dividends is generally excluded, although certain proceeds from the sale of equity stakes are counted.

These distinctions matter because the ranking measures estimated annual earnings rather than personal wealth or the value of all assets owned by each player.

A financial legacy beyond the pitch

Ronaldo’s latest milestone adds another dimension to a career defined by goals, trophies, records and commercial achievements.

His ability to remain at the top of football’s earnings rankings at 41 demonstrates the enduring value of his sporting reputation and business profile. While younger stars are closing the gap in terms of commercial growth, none currently approaches his projected annual income.

Messi remains his closest rival financially, while Mbappe, Haaland and Yamal represent different stages of the next generation’s rise.

For Ronaldo, however, surpassing $2 billion in career earnings is a milestone distinct from his achievements on the pitch. It reflects the scale of the commercial enterprise built around his football career and reinforces his standing as one of the most financially successful athletes in sporting history.
