The FBI arrested an OpenAI engineer on October 9, 2026, after the company found a hidden audio recording device in an executive conference room at its San Francisco office.
The suspect, 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, faces a federal charge of attempting to intercept oral communications.
A recorder in the restroom supplies
The device was discovered on September 30 during what was described as a routine security inspection. Investigators believe it was planted around September 28, roughly two days earlier.
The recorder was hidden inside toilet paper and plugged into a USB port on a television in the room. That setup allowed it to silently capture confidential conversations in the space.
According to the research findings, those conversations concerned OpenAI’s advanced technologies, particularly its super intelligence projects.
On October 5, a second, similar device was found in an unsecured bag associated with Alfozan.
OpenAI used its own AI models to run an in-depth investigative analysis, which ultimately led to Alfozan being identified as the suspect.
The company terminated his employment. Four days after the second device surfaced, the FBI made its arrest.
Who is Abdulrahman Alfozan
Alfozan joined OpenAI in July 2025 as an engineer on the product team. Before that, he held notable roles at Meta and at an AI infrastructure firm.
FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the serious intent he sees behind the operation. He pointed specifically to the sensitive nature of the communications at stake, namely discussions about super intelligence technology.
If convicted, Alfozan could face up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. He could also face an additional three years of supervised release.
Those are the maximum penalties. As with any federal case, the charge is an allegation, and Alfozan has not been convicted of anything.
What OpenAI says was not taken
OpenAI stated there is no evidence that customer data, model weights, or source code were stolen.
The investigation remains ongoing. The current picture is a company saying the recorder captured conversations, but nothing indicates the deepest technical assets walked out the door.
