Kimi Antonelli has a chance to make Formula 1 history this weekend at the United States Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver enters the race at Circuit of the Americas with a commanding lead in the Drivers’ Championship and an opportunity to become the youngest world champion in F1 history.
Antonelli currently has 340 points, putting him 102 points ahead of Mercedes teammate George Russell and 111 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton in third. After an impressive season that has included eight victories, the 20 year old is closing in on his first championship.
However, winning the title in Austin will require more than another strong performance.
Antonelli Must Win in Austin
The first requirement is simple: Antonelli must win Sunday’s United States Grand Prix. A victory would give him 25 additional points and put him in position to clinch the championship, provided his closest challengers fail to score enough points.
Russell must finish ninth or lower, while Hamilton needs to finish fifth or lower. If those results happen alongside an Antonelli victory, the Mercedes star will secure the championship with five races still remaining.
The points situation makes this a difficult combination, but Antonelli has already shown that he can deliver under pressure. His consistency throughout the season has allowed him to build a significant advantage over the rest of the field.
Russell and Hamilton Stand in His Way
Russell remains Antonelli’s closest competitor, and the Mercedes teammates could have a defining weekend in their championship battle. Russell needs a strong result to keep his title hopes alive, while Antonelli will be focused on maximizing his points.
Hamilton also remains mathematically in contention. The Ferrari driver trails Antonelli by 111 points, meaning he needs a major result in Austin to prevent the championship leader from potentially celebrating early.
Other drivers, including Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, are also still mathematically alive in the title race. However, an Antonelli victory would eliminate several of those challengers from championship contention.
A Chance to Make History
If Antonelli cannot complete the required combination of results in Austin, he will have additional opportunities to clinch the title in the remaining races.
Still, winning this weekend would be a remarkable achievement. Antonelli is in only his second Formula 1 season, and becoming champion at 20 would make him the youngest world champion in the sport’s history.
The pressure will be high, but the path is clear: win the United States Grand Prix and hope Russell and Hamilton finish far enough down the order.
Antonelli has controlled much of the championship battle this season. Now, he has the opportunity to turn that dominance into a historic title.
