By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño has dismissed reports of an internal effort within his Cabinet to prevent him from leading the People’s United Party into the 2030 general election.
Speaking to reporters upon his return from Bangkok, Briceño was asked about allegations that some Cabinet ministers were working against his plans to seek a third consecutive term in office.
The Prime Minister categorically rejected the suggestion, insisting that the Cabinet, government and governing party remain united.
According to Briceño, it was members of his own Cabinet who encouraged him to publicly announce his intention to contest the next general election.
He explained that he had initially discussed the possibility privately before eventually deciding to make his intentions known following encouragement from colleagues.
The Prime Minister’s remarks follow his announcement earlier this month that he intends to lead the PUP into the 2030 general election.
Briceño first became Prime Minister following the PUP’s victory in November 2020 and secured a second consecutive term in March 2025.
His announcement has generated political discussion, particularly following recent Cabinet changes and allegations of internal tensions within the governing party.
However, Briceño insisted that reports of an effort to prevent him from seeking another term are unfounded.
