The American Idol winner, who built her reputation on being warm and accessible, is not known for airing grievances in public.
Yet on Saturday, October 10, she took to X to detail what she described as a humiliating shopping experience at Art of Play, a curiosity and magic shop in Brooklyn, New York.
Clarkson wrote that she had visited the store specifically because she liked what she had seen and intended to buy several items.
During the visit, she alleged that a member of staff treated her as though she could not afford what she was looking at, a slight she compared to the famous boutique scene in the 1990 film Pretty Woman, where Julia Roberts' character is dismissed by a condescending saleswoman.
The singer also argued that the employee's behaviour had cost the shop a considerable sale.
What an insider said about the incident
A source close to Clarkson told Page Six that the public callout was deeply out of character for the singer.
"If she's actually calling out a store publicly, she must've been livid," the insider said.
The source was quick to defend her reputation, describing her as someone who does not expect celebrity perks or throw her weight around.
"She's not someone who goes around making a big deal out of nothing," they added.
With two conflicting accounts of what took place in the store and no independent record of the exchange, the disagreement has continued to generate attention online.
What started as a shopping trip ended with one of the biggest names in American pop music in a very public standoff with a Brooklyn curiosity shop.
