Tennessee man turns backyard pool into 500,000-gallon water playground

Most people who dream of a backyard pool imagine a simple rectangle with a diving board and a few lounge chairs. Micky Thornton imagined something far bigger. When he moved to Covington, Tennessee, in 1992, he wanted a place where his family could swim, but he also carried an idea from childhood that refused to stay small.

By the time work began on Labor Day in 1993, Thornton was preparing to create a pond-sized water playground rather than an ordinary swimming pool.Nearly three decades later, that project had become a remarkable 500,000-gallon backyard pool built with 320 yards of gunite and 40,000 pounds of steel rebar. It includes rock-lined waterfalls, sprayers and a filtration system Thornton designed himself. According to WGN-TV and TurnTo23, the pool began as a family project but eventually became a destination for parties, weddings, reunions and baptisms. A childhood idea became a lifelong project

As per the reports, Thornton said the idea first came to him when he was about nine or ten years old.

He did not want a pool where swimmers felt confined to a small box. Instead, he wanted a large and deep space where people could swim freely, dive and enjoy the water without feeling restricted. When he moved to Covington at the age of 38, the dream returned with greater urgency. He was 39 when he started digging in 1993 and later explained that he felt it was time to begin if he ever wanted to build something on that scale. The initial excavation went more than 20 feet deep and was first lined with a polyethylene mat, according to WGN-TV.

His wife, Jane Thornton, had only one major request: the pool should not sit beside the house. Micky wanted to use the pasture land that sloped downhill, while Jane believed he could find a way to make it work. That conversation led to a layout that allowed the pool to spread across the property rather than crowd the family home, as per the reports.

Built with steel, concrete and patience

The pool’s construction was never a single-season job. Thornton began with a basic excavation and liner, then kept improving the space as the years passed.

In 1998 and 1999, the family replaced the rubber liner and added a waterfall along with much of the rock decoration. Those features lasted about 15 years before the pool received another major update in 2013.The finished structure relies on serious engineering materials. It uses 320 yards of gunite, a cement-and-sand mixture applied under pressure and often used for tunnels and structural repairs, along with 40,000 pounds of steel rebar.

Those materials gave the pool the strength and shape needed to hold an estimated 500,000 gallons of water.Thornton also had to solve the practical challenge of keeping that much water clean. Because the pool was far larger than a standard residential design, he built his own filtration system from the beginning. WGN-TV reported that he created a system that was more effective and efficient than conventional options, allowing the unusual backyard pool to remain usable for large groups.

A backyard that became a community space

Although the pool was originally intended for Thornton’s family, it quickly attracted friends, neighbours and visitors. The Thorntons initially allowed people to swim free of charge, but so many guests offered to pay that the couple eventually settled on a reasonable fixed donation.Over time, the pool became the setting for children’s soccer-team gatherings, birthday parties, family reunions, weddings and other large outings.

The Thorntons began accepting reservations through their Facebook page, turning their private backyard into a place where families could celebrate major moments together. The pool has also hosted some unexpected visitors. Jane Thornton recalled that the Japanese National baseball team asked to spend an afternoon there. She expected about 25 people, but 50 arrived, giving the backyard pool an international moment few homeowners could have predicted.

Baptisms gave the pool deeper meaning

Beyond the parties and swimming, the pool became a spiritual space for many people. Thornton said that more than 400 people from different churches have been baptized in its waters. He described that as something he found meaningful, even though he regretted never keeping an exact count of every baptism, as per WGN-TV.That detail changes the way the pool should be understood. It is not merely an oversized construction project or an unusual piece of backyard engineering.

For many visitors, it became a place of celebration, community and personal milestones, from childhood birthdays to weddings and religious ceremonies.Rev. Keith King, Pastor of Worship even praised the Thornton family for helping in over 400 baptisms in their pool. Rev. Keith King said in an article on St. Luke's Methodist Church's website, "Their pool has truly been a dream come true and has been a huge blessing to others...

Each of us has a passion, a dream. The Thornton family has shown that when you work to make a dream come true, and share that dream with others, you find great joy.

When you share your passion with others you become a blessing."

A reminder that big dreams take time

Thornton’s pool stands out because it was built gradually, with vision and persistence rather than a rushed timetable. What began as a deep hole in a Tennessee pasture evolved over decades into a 500,000-gallon water playground with waterfalls, rock features, sprayers and space for hundreds of guests. His story is a reminder that ambitious ideas do not always need to be completed immediately. Sometimes they need time, repeated improvements and the willingness to keep working long after the initial excitement fades. Thornton started with a childhood wish for room to swim and ended up creating one of the most extraordinary backyard pools ever built.
