Mobile phone inside pant pocket
The idea that carrying a phone in your pocket might affect fertility sounds like the kind of health scare that spreads faster than the science behind it. According to Dr. Rajeev Agarwal, Founder of Dame Health and Gynaecologist and Senior Infertility Specialist at Renew Healthcare, the honest answer is more nuanced than either the alarming headlines or dismissive skepticism suggest.Multiple meta-analyses, including one pooling 18 studies and over 4,000 semen samples, have found mobile phone radiofrequency exposure (RF-EMR) consistently associated with reduced sperm motility and viability. Interestingly, the effect on sperm concentration, the actual "count", has been far less consistent, with several studies finding no clear association at all. "This is where the headline oversimplifies things," says Dr.
Agarwal. "Motility and viability show a more consistent signal than count specifically."Some analyses found the effect more pronounced when phones are carried in front trouser pockets specifically, close to the testes. Two mechanisms have been proposed: RF-EMR generating oxidative stress in sperm cells, and a mild thermal effect, since healthy sperm production requires testes to stay slightly cooler than core body temperature.
However, Dr. Agarwal adds an important caveat: at least one well-designed prospective study tracking real couples trying to conceive, rather than testing semen in a lab dish, found no clear link between pocket-carrying habits and actual semen quality or time to pregnancy. "Most of the alarming data comes from lab exposure or surveys, not from tracking real outcomes," he notes. "This is a plausible risk factor worth being sensible about, not a proven cause of infertility.
"What is on firmer ground, Dr. Agarwal says, is oxidative stress itself as a broader contributor to poor sperm health, regardless of its exact source. Randomized trials show Coenzyme Q10 supplementation reduces oxidative stress markers and measurably improves sperm motility. "CoQ10 works on the same pathway implicated in phone-radiation research, oxidative damage to sperm," he explains. "It isn't a proven antidote to phone exposure specifically, but it's well-evidenced for sperm health generally.
"CoQ10 isn't the only ingredient with evidence behind it here, he adds. A network meta-analysis of randomized trials found zinc, selenium, vitamin C, vitamin E, and lycopene each show measurable benefits on different sperm parameters, zinc and selenium linked to sperm concentration and morphology, lycopene shown to reduce oxidative DNA damage. "Men's Fertility Boost was built around this evidence base," Dr.
Agarwal says.
"It's a combination of antioxidants addressing oxidative stress through different mechanisms, alongside L-methylfolate and other nutrients relevant to sperm health."His practical advice: there's little downside to keeping phones out of front pockets during long calls or overnight charging. But no man should assume a phone explains a low sperm count without a proper clinical evaluation first.
