Whether your fall travels are taking you on a cross-country road trip, a far-flung city tour, or a series of weekend getaways, it all starts with assembling the right cast of characters for your vacation wardrobe. That funnel-neck jacket you splurged on in September? It deserves to make its debut on a trip to Paris—but as for the rest of your suitcase, that’s where a little packing savvy comes in.
Luckily, assembling a fall travel capsule wardrobe is easy. You don’t yet have to figure out a Tetris-like storage system for your bulkiest coats. Plus, this is the season of layerable basics; a few sweaters here, a favorite pair of jeans there. You likely already have the majority of pieces available in your closet—and if you don’t, we have suggestions ahead—all that’s left is figuring out what’s actually worth bringing along.
From the packable shoes to the soft knitwear to the practical items you can wear on the plane ride over and reimagine for your itinerary, we put together nine key travel capsule wardrobe essentials worth investing in this autumn.
Transitional Outerwear
From the ever-popular trench to fresh spins on leather jackets, you’ll need at least one practical piece of outerwear for your trip—the hard part is narrowing it down. Whichever way you lean, we recommend wearing it on the plane to free up luggage real estate. Toteme’s cotton-gabardine chore coat has a relaxed enough fit that you can wrap up in it on your flight to the destination.

Comfortable Travel Shoes
Depending on where you’re going, your in-transit shoe could also end up being in regular rotation in your vacation wardrobe. Over here, we’re fans of Nike’s Moon Shoe; though the Salomon XT-6 is a practical walking shoe for hitting 10,000 steps in a new city. Prefer something a little more polished? Choose a lower boot that won’t take up too much valuable suitcase space if you have to pack it up on your return.

Classic Button-Downs
This is the Renaissance man of the travel wardrobe. A good button-down can do it all: it can elevate your plane attire, it’s meeting-appropriate if you’re traveling for work, and it’s easy to dress up for cocktail hour. A blue oxford is always a classic choice, but we’re leaning into the palette of the moment with olive and khaki versions from TWP and Sold Out.

Do-It-All Denim
You’ll get a lot of mileage out of a good pair of jeans, to be worn with sweaters during the day and slinkier tops for that hard-to-nab dinner reservation. Opt for a mid- to low-rise and a roomier shape, and you can even wear these as your travel pants; personally, I’ve found AYR’s denim (which has the tiniest bit of stretch) to be comfortable enough for long car rides and red-eye flights alike.

Easy Knits
It’s a good time to be a sweater. From a cobalt crewneck to a tweed-stitch rollneck, get creative with this fall closet staple. Prefer something a little more lightweight? Tove’s Signe cardigan, a saffron-colored wool-and-cashmere blend, is seasonally apropos without going full pumpkin spice.

Packable Flats
Choose footwear that you can slot in flat along the base of your suitcase; Margaux’s black elasticized ballerinas and Flattered’s loafers are both versatile picks. Something without a heel is always best if you’ll be navigating hills and cobblestones; though these maroon slippers from The Row, with their shearling-lined interior, are comfortable enough for the flight, too.

Silky Slips
The joy of a slip, whether in dress or skirt form, is that it takes up next to no space in luggage. On the unexpected (or completely planned) occasion that calls for something a little dressier, pair yours with a structured jacket or even a soft knit. Mango’s lace-trimmed midi in a rich rosy mauve is perfectly autumnal.

Layerable Basics
Don’t forget to pack pieces you can throw on over or under your outfit to account for chillier evenings. H&M’s boxy long-sleeve is an easy topper for skirts; or, pop slim-fit V-necks from St. Agni and Tank Air under jackets when the weather report calls for layers.

Soft Scarves
For better or for worse, scarf season is here—and while we’re (hopefully) still a ways away from this extra step being a cold-weather survival necessity, right now, it’s just a fun way to introduce some texture into your capsule wardrobe. Choose a triangle scarf—Guest in Residence’s Americana print offers a subtle pop of pattern—or something longer you can cocoon yourself in on the plane. White & Warren’s caramel-colored cashmere is an office favorite.
