Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix told reporters after Tuesday’s practice that the hardest part of preparing for Thursday night’s home game against the Seattle Seahawks is mental. Seattle leads the NFL with 11 takeaways through five games, and Nix laid out the pull between attacking that defense and protecting the football.
“Honestly, really and truly, the biggest battle right now is like, you want to be aggressive, want to be aggressive, want to be aggressive, and then you see stats and you’re like, ‘Well, this team is causing the most turnovers in the league,’” Nix said. “And then you’re like, ‘OK, well, I can’t put my team in a situation where I’m turning the football over and putting our defense in a bad spot, giving them a short field,’ and at the end of the day, it’s like, who cares? Like, why would I go out there worried about throwing an interception? Why would I go out there trying to throw every football 50 yards down the field? Just play the play. If the play’s there, hit it. If it’s not there, check it down, run, throw it away, punt.”
“Just remind myself not to play heroball. It’s just one play at a time,” Nix continued. “If it’s not there, I’m not going to throw it into a team meeting. I’m going to check the ball down and we’re going to move on. And that’s just the play that’s given to me, and I have to continue to just do that.”
When Denver drafted Nix 12th overall in 2024, Sean Payton pointed to his knack for avoiding sacks and turnovers as his “superpower.”
Broncos QB Bo Nix: “Honestly, really and truly, the biggest battle right now is like, you want to be aggressive, want to be aggressive, want to be aggressive, and then you see stats and you’re like, ‘Well, this team is causing the most turnovers in the league,’ and then you’re like, ‘OK, well, I can’t put my team in a situation where I’m turning the football over and putting our defense in a bad spot, giving them a short field,’ and at the end of the day, it’s like, who cares? Like, why would I go out there worried about throwing an interception? Why would I go out there trying to throw every football 50 yards down the field. Just play the play. If the play’s there, hit it. If it’s not there, check it down, run, throw it away, punt. Who cares? That’s the play that I was dealt, and I have to do — just remind myself not to play heroball. It’s just one play at a time. Do exactly what I’m supposed to do, and who cares? If the play causes me to throw an interception and I forced it and that was there and I I liked what I saw, it may happen. It’s going to happen. It’s happened before. It may happen again. If it’s not there, I’m not going to throw it into a team meeting. I’m going to check the ball down and we’re going to move on. And that’s just the play that’s given to me, and I have to continue to just do that.”

Where have Bo Nix’s turnovers actually come from?
Through five games, Nix has thrown three interceptions on 162 attempts and fumbled four times, twice in Sunday’s 23-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The one he lost came at Denver’s 42 late in the third quarter, and Kimani Vidal ran 42 yards for a touchdown on the next snap to put the Chargers up 17-10.
His answer on Tuesday was built around interceptions, and he landed on “who cares” about them, which fits a passer throwing one every 54 attempts.
Nothing on his checklist of checking it down, running, throwing it away or punting addresses a ball coming loose in the pocket, and Seattle ranks tied for fourth in the league in quick pressures.

The Broncos rank 29th in scoring at 18.0 points per game, and only the Arizona Cardinals have fewer plays of 20 or more yards than Denver’s 11. Nix threw for 123 yards against the Chargers, the second-lowest total of his career, in Payton’s first game back calling plays. An offense that short on big plays can only check down so often before it is punting, the last option on Nix’s list.
Seattle arrives at 3-2 after committing four turnovers of its own in a 32-29 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Nix has fumbled more often than he has thrown interceptions this season, and against the league’s top takeaway defense, that is the habit Denver can least afford on Thursday night.
