Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem was a man who had already beaten the odds more than once. The 42-year-old Atlanta educator and school worker had survived cancer not once but twice, and just weeks before his death, he walked away from a car fire with his daughter. On Monday, 13 October 2026, he did not walk away.
Kariem was at Six Flags Over Georgia to celebrate a family occasion. He was riding the Goliath roller coaster alongside his niece when something went terribly wrong. According to the Cobb County Police Department and witness accounts, he was ejected from his seat. The moment ended in tragedy.
His wife and daughter were watching from the ground when it happened. Four other riders were taken to hospital with injuries.
Ride photos captured the tragedy
The moment the ride's safety measures failed was reportedly caught on the ride's automatic souvenir cameras.
Following the incident, Six Flags suspended all operations of Goliath and shut down nine similar roller coasters across six of its North American parks. The Cobb County Police Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, interviewing ride attendants, witnesses, and park employees to determine how the restraint system failed.
