NEW YORK — Jed York returned from his six-game suspension Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings, closing the disciplinary portion of a case commissioner Roger Goodell said underscores the league’s responsibility to hold everyone accountable.
That includes the people who own its teams.
The 49ers owner declined comment as he left the meetings Wednesday. But Goodell addressed the process that led to York’s punishment and the importance of a personal conduct policy that extends beyond the players.
“We went through a full process to understand the facts and the issues. We looked at it under the context of our personal conduct policy, which as you point out, applies to owners, commissioners and everybody else, players,” Goodell said. “And it’s something that we feel strongly about.”
York’s return following his prostitution arrest in Ohio puts him back in position to represent the 49ers in league business. It also brings the question of accountability into a room occupied by the NFL’s most powerful figures.
Players are the most visible representatives of the league, and their conduct routinely draws scrutiny. But Goodell’s explanation emphasized that the responsibility to uphold the NFL’s standards does not stop at the locker room door.
Ownership carries that obligation, too.
“I think we need to represent ourselves and our organizations properly. We saw a violation; we’ve dealt with it from a discipline standpoint. That’s concluded,” Goodell said “So he’ll be back representing the 49ers.”
Goodell’s comments drew a clear distinction between York’s completed punishment and the broader expectation that remains in place for everyone associated with the league.
The suspension is over. The responsibility to represent the organization properly continues.
For the NFL, the credibility of its conduct policy depends in part on its willingness to apply it to those with authority over teams, along with those who play for them. Goodell specifically included his own position among those covered by the policy.
That does not mean every violation produces an identical punishment. It does mean an owner’s place in the league does not put him outside the disciplinary process.
With York declining to speak Wednesday, his own assessment of the suspension and his return remains unaddressed publicly at the conclusion of the meetings.
Goodell, though, left no ambiguity about the league’s position on his status.
He’s back at work.
