The Saudi-led coalition reported that the Houthi movement has attempted attacks on numerous Saudi facilities, including airports and oil infrastructure. This escalation in hostilities has resulted in multiple casualties and injuries, further heightening tensions in the region. The coalition noted that 20 attacks had targeted Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport this month alone, amid broader strikes on Saudi infrastructure by the Houthis. The increase in violence marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Saudi-backed Yemeni government and the Iran-aligned Houthis.

Key Takeaways

• Markets appear to interpret the Houthi attacks as consistent with a potential closure of Saudi airspace, given the increased hostilities.
• The probability of Saudi airspace closure by January 1, 2027, has risen to 16.5%, suggesting market participants view this as a plausible scenario.
• The immediate market reaction to the news has been modest, with the November 1, 2026, contract showing little movement, currently at 5.5% YES.

What to Watch

Key actors like the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS) will be crucial in any decision regarding airspace closure. Observers should monitor for potential announcements or NOTAMs that could indicate a formal closure. Additionally, further Houthi attacks or retaliatory strikes by Saudi Arabia could influence market pricing, as could any statements from international aviation bodies like the FAA or EASA. The situation remains fluid, with developments likely affecting market perceptions of airspace security in the coming weeks.
