Expats · Kenya
For most American expats, Nairobi’s western suburbs of Karen and Gigiri are the best place to live in Kenya: green, close to international schools and the United Nations, and far from the districts Washington warns against. The coast around Diani ranks third because the beach life is real but security needs more homework. Kenya is rated Level 2, “exercise increased caution”, by the US State Department.
Key Facts
—Who. American retirees, remote workers, aid staff and families weighing Kenya, a country that hosts the United Nations’ Nairobi headquarters.
—What. Four areas ranked on safety warnings, services, schools and transport: Karen and Gigiri, Kilimani and Westlands, Diani, and Mombasa.
—Why it matters. The US State Department warns against travel to Nairobi’s Eastleigh and Kibera, to the Somalia border counties and to parts of the north coast, so the choice of neighbourhood matters more than the choice of city.
—Getting around. The Madaraka Express train links Nairobi and Mombasa in about 4 hours 30 minutes, with Economy fares of KSh 1,500 (about US$12) at KSh 129.65 per US dollar.
—Entry. Most visitors, including US citizens, need an electronic travel authorisation (eTA), applied for online and usually processed in about three days.
The Short Answer: Nairobi’s Gated Suburbs First, Mombasa Last
Karen and Gigiri rank first because they combine quiet, tree-lined streets with the highest concentration of foreign schools, clinics and embassy staff. Kilimani and Westlands rank second for apartments, restaurants and short commutes, though traffic is heavy.
This ranking is our editorial judgement, not a statistical index. We found no dated, official crime rate for individual Nairobi suburbs, so the order rests on published safety warnings, where services are located and how foreigners describe each area.
| Rank | Area | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Karen, Gigiri and Runda (Nairobi) | Space, gardens, schools, UN and embassy community | Long drives; traffic to the centre |
| 2 | Kilimani and Westlands (Nairobi) | Apartments, restaurants, offices within reach | Congestion and noise; pick the street with care |
| 3 | Diani Beach (Kwale County) | Beach life and a slower pace | Security needs local advice; fewer services |
| 4 | Mombasa | Port city, railway terminus, history | Heat and humidity; fewer foreign-friendly services than Nairobi |
How We Ranked, and What Washington Says About Kenya
The US State Department rates Kenya Level 2, “exercise increased caution”, citing crime, terrorism, kidnapping and unrest. Its advisory tells Americans to reconsider travel to the Nairobi neighbourhoods of Eastleigh and Kibera because of armed carjacking, mugging, home invasion and kidnapping.
The advisory also says Americans should not travel to the Somalia border counties of Garissa, Wajir and Mandera, to Tana River County or to coastal areas north of Malindi. It lists other remote border areas too.
Advisories change, so read the full text on the State Department site before you travel.
1. Karen, Gigiri and Runda: The Expat Heartland
Karen, in the south-west of Nairobi, is a garden suburb of large plots and mature trees with a long-standing foreign community. Gigiri, in the north, is the diplomatic district around the United Nations Office at Nairobi, which hosts the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme and UN-Habitat.
Nairobi sits at about 1,800 metres, so days are mild and nights are cool all year. That altitude is a draw for people who dislike tropical heat, and it spares the city much of the coast’s humidity.
The trade-off is distance and traffic. A school run or a hospital visit can take an hour each way at peak times, so many families choose a home by where the school is. Our healthcare guide explains where the private hospitals are.
2. Kilimani and Westlands: Apartments Near the Action
Kilimani and Westlands are apartment districts close to offices, shops and restaurants. They suit single professionals and couples who want to walk to dinner and keep a short commute.
Street-level crime is the main concern in dense parts of the city, and the State Department lists armed carjacking and mugging among the risks across Kenya. Choose a building with a guarded entrance, avoid walking at night and use a ride-hailing app rather than hailing a street taxi. Our Is Kenya safe for expats guide covers the precautions in detail.
3. Diani Beach: The Coast Lifestyle
Diani is a long stretch of white-sand beach in Kwale County, south of Mombasa, and the favourite coastal base for foreign residents. We did not find Kwale County among the areas the US advisory tells Americans not to visit, but the advisory does single out stretches of the coast for terrorism and kidnapping risk.
Residents and tourists in Diani have long raised concerns about insecurity, and Kenyan press reports describe new street lighting and extra patrols meant to restore night-time activity. Ask neighbours and your landlord about specific roads and the hours when they feel safe before you commit to a lease.
4. Mombasa: Port, Railway and Heat
Mombasa is Kenya’s main port and the coastal end of the Madaraka Express railway. The train takes about 4 hours 30 minutes to Nairobi, with three daily departures at 08:00, 15:00 and 22:00, and Economy fares of KSh 1,500 (about US$12) one way.
We rank Mombasa last for newcomers because of heat, humidity and fewer foreign-friendly services than Nairobi. It still suits people who work in shipping or trade, or who want a historic coastal city.
Entry and Residency: What the Rules Say
Most foreign visitors, including US citizens, must apply online for an electronic travel authorisation, known as an eTA, before they travel. Citizens of some countries and East African Community members are exempt. The official eTA portal says applications are usually processed in about three days and advises applying at least two weeks ahead.
Living or working in Kenya needs a separate permit, and landing without a visa is not permission to work. Our residency visa guide sets out the classes, and our guide to the eTA and travel insurance rule covers what visitors must buy.
What It Means for You
If you are scouting Kenya, rent for a few months in two areas before you commit to either. Visit in the dry and the rainy season, and confirm travel advice with your embassy before booking.
Kenya observes Mashujaa Day, a national holiday, on Tuesday 20 October 2026, and September inflation was 6.8%, according to the national statistics bureau. Our retirement guide, Nairobi cost of living guide and Kenya hub carry the rest.
What Is Not Known
We could not confirm current rents by suburb or a crime rate for any Nairobi district, and we could not read the current State Department advisory line by line, so its wording is taken from reports of it. The ranking is therefore a judgement about services and published warnings, not a measured safety index.
Fares, entry rules and advisories change often. Check the official sources listed below before you travel or sign a lease.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best place to live in Kenya for expats?
For most American expats, Nairobi’s Karen and Gigiri area is the best base because it has the greatest concentration of international schools, embassies and UN staff. Kilimani and Westlands rank second for apartments and walkability.
Is Kenya safe for American expats?
The US State Department rates Kenya Level 2, exercise increased caution, and warns against travel to Nairobi’s Eastleigh and Kibera and to several border and north-coast areas. Most expats live in a few gated suburbs and take the precautions the embassy lists, such as avoiding night driving and sharing less about travel plans.
Do Americans need a visa to live in Kenya?
Visitors, including US citizens, apply online for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA), which the official portal says is usually processed in about three days. Living or working in Kenya needs a separate permit or residency class, covered in our Kenya residency guide.
Is Diani Beach a good place to live?
It suits people who want a beach lifestyle, and it sits in Kwale County, which we did not find among the areas the US warning tells Americans not to visit. Security has needed attention, so ask local residents and your landlord about specific roads before you sign a lease.
How do you get from Nairobi to Mombasa?
The Madaraka Express train takes about four and a half hours and runs three times a day. Reported one-way fares are KSh 1,500 (about US$12) in Economy and KSh 4,500 (about US$35) in First Class.
Why is Nairobi popular with international organisations?
The United Nations Office at Nairobi in Gigiri hosts the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme and UN-Habitat. That draws diplomats, aid workers and consultants, and it supports a large market for expat housing and schools.
