Khanyi Mbau is not your typical birthday girl. The Johannesburg-based media personality broke her silence on turning a year older on Thursday, 15 October 2026, sharing a deeply personal message on Instagram that revealed she steers clear of conventional birthday traditions entirely.
Writing to her followers with warmth and intention, Mbau referred to her birthday as her "solar return" — a term rooted in astrology describing the moment the sun returns to its exact position at the time of one's birth. While she made it clear she doesn't engage in cake rituals or the usual birthday fanfare, she was far from ungrateful for the outpouring of love she received.
Khanyi Mbau's birthday message to fans
In her post, Mbau wrote: "What a beautiful day… thank you for all those that took a moment to observe my solar return (birthday) with so much grace and love… I do not celebrate or partake in cake rituals or the activity but warmly accept all your words and gestures."
She also shared her intentions for the year ahead, leaning into spiritual and metaphysical language. "I look forward to the year of the fire Goat and bid the fire horse farewell soon," she wrote, before listing her wishes: "To less attachments / An open heart / Love in abundance / A financial flow with ease / And to maintain the flow as I remember my entire song of the cosmos."
Mbau went on to acknowledge those who supported her during a personal journey of self-discovery, writing: "To all those that held space for me while I was finding my way back, thank you for the hums and chants that echo through dreams, through my thoughts, through the flow of water and guides."
She closed her message with gratitude for gifts and flowers she received, adding: "My heart is warm and guided. In abundance, I say thank you."
