Dr. Muhammad Yousaf, Associate Professor at the Centre for Media and Communication Studies, University of Gujrat, was the guest speaker.
During his talk, Dr. Yousaf highlighted the growing challenges posed by information disorder in the digital age and explained the conceptual differences between misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. He discussed how false and misleading information, fake news, and deepfakes generated through artificial intelligence can influence public opinion, intensify political polarization, undermine trust in democratic institutions, and pose risks to public health and national security.
Emphasizing the need to address these challenges, Dr. Yousaf stressed the importance of media and information literacy, critical thinking, fact-checking, and responsible communication. He underscored the need to verify information through credible sources before sharing it on social media and highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts by educational institutions, media organizations, state institutions, and digital platforms to counter the spread of misleading content.
He further noted that information disorder should be viewed not merely as a communication problem but as a broader societal and national security challenge requiring sustained public awareness and effective institutional responses.
At the conclusion of the seminar, Dr. Bilal, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, thanked Dr. Muhammad Yousaf for his insightful talk and appreciated his contribution to raising awareness about information disorder and its implications for national security.
