Three games into the season and the Gophers men’s hockey team is still looking for its first win.
No. 20 Minnesota was no match for No. 9 Minnesota-Duluth. The hosts turned a close game into a laugher by means of a torrential second period that spelled a 7-1 loss for the visitors on Friday night in Duluth.
The Gophers’ only bright spot of an evening on the shore of Lake Superior was a goal by Jacob Kvasnicka with 62 seconds remaining in the first frame.
Other than that, the night belonged to the hosts. UMD logged three power-play goals as part of a four-score second period that altered the course of the contest.
It wasn’t a shining night for the Minnesota goaltenders, with Luca Di Pasquo making 17 saves on 21 shots faced while Melvin Strahl making 14 saves on 17 pucks put on his net. Offensively, the Gophers mustered up just 25 shots on the night.
Minnesota and UMD face off at 6 p.m. Saturday to close out their weekend series.
