Riyadh – Saudi Defense Ministry spokesman, Major General Turki al-Maliki, announced on Saturday the interception and destruction of four drones in the past few hours in the Riyadh, Eastern, and Southern regions.
Al-Maliki stated in a statement published on his account on the “X” platform: “We intercepted and destroyed four drones in the past few hours in the Riyadh, Eastern, and Southern regions.”
Earlier on Saturday, Saudi Arabia announced the destruction of two ballistic missile launch sites in Saada province, Yemen.
On Friday, Saudi Arabia announced the interception and destruction of a ballistic missile launched towards the Red Sea city of Yanbu.
Saudi Arabia has been subjected to almost daily attacks by the Houthis using missiles and drones for several days.
The most violent of these attacks was on Riyadh airport on Saturday, which resulted in the death of 13 people and injuries to more than 300 others, marking the deadliest attack the Kingdom has witnessed in over a decade.
Amid the ongoing war in the Middle East, a ceasefire that had been in place in Yemen since 2022 between the Houthis and Yemeni government forces collapsed in July, and fighting resumed. The Houthis made territorial gains, seizing control of the western coast and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
This coincided with an escalation of the conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia intensified its airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen, while government forces announced last week the start of a large-scale offensive to retake territory controlled by the group.
