Pedro Moura, who has been the general coordinator of the Border and Foreigners Coordination Unit of the Internal Security System since 2024, will be sworn in at a ceremony presided over by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, in the main hall of the Ministry of Internal Administration.
The new national director of the Public Security Police, Chief Superintendent Pedro Moura, takes office today, replacing Luís Carrilho, who had been in the position since May 2024.
Police unions seek dialogue
According to the Police Professionals' Union Association (ASPP/PSP), the new national director of the PSP assumes his duties in a context “of strong opposition” to salary increases and “at a complex and demanding time for the institution.”
ASPP/PSP believes that Pedro Moura will have to deal with significant difficulties and adopt a firm stance to demand the necessary resources and investments from the Government.
The largest union of the PSP (Public Security Police) will request an urgent meeting to convey its concerns and appeal for an improvement in working conditions, at a time when negotiations with the Government continue, and joint protests between police officers and GNR (National Republican Guard) military personnel are ongoing.
Experience in police leadership
Pedro Moura, 59 years old, has been in the Border and Foreigners Coordination Unit of the Internal Security System since 2024, having previously headed the office of the national director of the PSP (Public Security Police) between 2023 and 2024, and been in charge of the PSP's Operations Department between 2022 and 2023.
Luís Carrilho will take up the position of liaison officer in Paris, replacing Magina da Silva, also a former national director of the PSP (Public Security Police), whose term of service ends this October.
