Thunder Rookie Aday Mara's NBA Debut in Jeopardy After Contract Dispute

The Oklahoma City Thunder landed one of the biggest steals of the 2026 NBA Draft when they selected Michigan's 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara with the 12th overall pick. The rookie impressed in preseason, highlighted by a breakout performance against the Atlanta Hawks in which he recorded 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four blocks in 33 minutes. A few days earlier, he scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds while shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the field.

Mara is expected to play an important role for the Thunder this season as they look to contend for another NBA title. But just days before their season opener, the rookie finds himself at the center of an unusual contract dispute with his former European club, Basket Zaragoza.

According to BasketNews, Zaragoza, a Spanish team competing in Liga ACB, has publicly challenged Mara's move to Oklahoma City, arguing that he remains under contract with the club through the 2026-27 season. In an official statement, Zaragoza said it had not yet received a request for Mara's international transfer but would formally oppose one if it arrived. The club also said it had already communicated its position to the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), FIBA, the NBA and the Thunder following the draft.

The Thunder have already pushed back against the allegations. A team spokesperson told BasketNews, "Aday last played three years of NCAA college basketball and therefore, as advised by the NBA, no clearance from the Spanish team is required for him to play in the NBA."

The situation remains unresolved, and the dispute is the last thing Mara or the Thunder need heading into the new season.

Mara was the Thunder's first-round pick and was expected to contribute right away, providing valuable minutes off the bench behind Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren. His size and physicality could give Oklahoma City another strong presence in the paint, an area the team needed to address after falling to the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals last season.

If the dispute ultimately prevents Mara from playing for the entire 2026-27 season, it would be a significant blow for Oklahoma City. The Thunder open their regular season Tuesday, October 20, in San Antonio, leaving little time for the situation to be resolved before tipoff.

For now, the Thunder do not appear willing to back down, and Mara's status for the season opener remains a major storyline to watch.
