With the WNBA off-season here, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is in a transition. Three days after the Fever’s first-round playoff loss to the Las Vegas Aces, Cunningham is one of the league’s unrestricted free agents, left to ponder her immediate and long-term future in Indiana and elsewhere as her upcoming itinerary suggests: time away from the court.
Looking Back on a Historic Year With the Fever
The Fever will wrap up their campaign with a 94-83 Game 3 loss to the Aces. Both little bit of something to hang their hats on. Indiana finished 28-16, the franchise’s best regular-season mark and a return to a familiar feeling of chemistry and fighting with star teammate Caitlin Clark.
In her No Hesitation podcast Cunningham reflected on the campaign and how the team has developed:
“It was so much fun and we were so good. The squad are one big family, they really do love each other… “We really have got a lot to be proud about. “We hate losing, we’re so competitive and we just wanted a championship to go with it.”
What’s Next in Free Agency?
Having played the 2026 season on a one-year contract, Cunningham is an unrestricted free agent. She has left her future employer to be determined along with other top Fever players.
When pressed about her upcoming free agency and potential future plans, Cunningham responded to the reporter.
“I don’t know what the offseason is gonna be like. I think a lot of guys are in free agency now, so who knows?”
With front offices, including Indiana GM Amber Cox, sorting through their roster decisions this season, Cunningham is taking a different approach for now by taking a breather, tending to her personal life and dealing with the pressures of a hectic lifestyle where basketball is taking a distant backseat.
