The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) confirmed the tragedy in an official statement, saying a public service vehicle and a commercial vehicle were involved in the incident.
According to the authority, the two vehicles collided head-on, and early indications suggest that improper overtaking may have played a role in causing the crash. Several other passengers sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
The authority added that its crash investigation team is working closely with police to determine the full sequence of events that led to the collision.
"Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicles collided head-on and suggest that improper overtaking may have contributed to the crash. The NTSA crash investigation team is collaborating with the police to establish the full circumstances that led to the crash," NTSA said.
NTSA conveyed its condolences to the families of those who perished and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to all those receiving treatment," the Director General said.
The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway remains one of the country's most heavily used transport corridors, carrying both passenger and cargo traffic between the capital and the coast.
