New York, October 21, 2026 – The Committee to Protect Journalists submitted testimony to the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission ahead of its October 21 briefing on transnational networks fueling the war in Sudan, highlighting how foreign weapons, financing, personnel, and logistical support sustain armed actors responsible for killing, detaining, and otherwise targeting journalists.
CPJ’s testimony outlines the devastating impact of the war on Sudan’s press, including killings, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, sexual violence, displacement, and censorship, and highlights the critical role Sudanese journalists play in documenting atrocities and preserving evidence for accountability.
The testimony calls on Congress to increase scrutiny of the transnational networks sustaining the conflict, strengthen oversight of arms transfers, pursue accountability for attacks on journalists, and support Sudanese journalists and independent media.
