Autumn is such a changeable season, especially in the Algarve. It begins while the weather is still hot and sunny, the beaches are busy, and summer doesn’t seem to be quite over yet. Then October arrives; things slowly start to quieten down, the temperatures become more comfortable, and suddenly Halloween is just around the corner.
November usually feels a little calmer, but there are still plenty of events taking place across the region, from traditional fairs and food festivals to concerts, walking festivals and international sporting events.
And although we often associate December with winter, astronomical autumn doesn’t actually end until 21 December, while meteorological autumn finishes on 30 November.
So, whether you live in the Algarve or are planning to visit during the coming months, here are some of the events worth adding to your calendar.
October
Feira de Santa Iria – Faro | 15–25 October
One of Faro’s best-known traditional fairs returns for eleven days, bringing fairground rides, food stalls, sweets, handicrafts and entertainment to the city.

The fair has a long history and there is usually something for all ages, from children’s attractions to rides for those looking for a little more excitement.
Halloween at Zoomarine – Guia, Albufeira | 20–31 October
Halloween is becoming increasingly popular in the Algarve, and Zoomarine is once again joining the celebrations.
Visitors can expect Halloween decorations, street performances, face painting and activities for children. There will also be costume contests on 28 and 31 October, while older visitors can enjoy some of the scarier attractions designed for those aged over 14.
Pumpkin Market – Vila Vita Biergarten, Porches | 24 October
For something a little different, Vila Vita Biergarten is organising an autumn market with pumpkins, traditional food, live music and family entertainment.
The event takes place from 12.30pm to 8pm, with free entry. It’s a nice opportunity to enjoy a different kind of autumn celebration, especially with children.

Algarve Classic Festival – Portimão | 30 October–1 November
Motorsport fans can look forward to the return of the Algarve Classic Festival at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.
The three-day event brings together hundreds of classic racing cars and drivers, with historic single-seaters, GT cars and other vehicles competing on the circuit.
It’s a great opportunity to see some beautiful classic cars in action rather than just on display.
Halloween celebrations – Across the Algarve | 30–31 October
There are also plenty of Halloween activities taking place across the region.
Portimão Arena is hosting Fun Day Halloween on 31 October and 1 November, with giant inflatables, trampolines, slides and obstacle courses for children.
In Albufeira, Play Albufeira is organising a Halloween Kids Party on 31 October, with games, crafts, themed food and trick-or-treat activities.
For adults, Halloween parties are planned at Katedral and Oceans Club in Praia da Rocha, while Werk Room in Faro is organising an evening with music, performances and tarot readings.
Quinta do Lago also has several Halloween activities, including a themed dinner at Casa do Lago on 30 October.
November
Festa da Castanha – Marmelete, Monchique | 1 November
November begins with one of the Algarve’s traditional autumn celebrations.
The Chestnut Festival in Marmelete is a lovely opportunity to visit the countryside and enjoy roasted chestnuts, local food and music.
The event takes place at Casa do Povo de Marmelete, starting at 2.30pm, with free entry.
Barão de São João Walk & Art Fest – Lagos | 6–8 November
One of the more interesting events for those who enjoy nature and culture is the Walk & Art Fest in Barão de São João.
The festival combines guided walks, workshops, art and activities for children, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the countryside around this small village near Lagos.

It’s also a great excuse to discover a part of the Algarve that many tourists never get to see.
Feira de São Martinho – Portimão | 6–15 November
One of the Algarve’s oldest and most popular traditional fairs returns to the Parque de Feiras e Exposições in Portimão.
Dating back more than 350 years, the fair is known for its roasted chestnuts, traditional sweets, food stalls and fairground rides.
It’s one of those events that many local families visit every year, and for me, it really marks the arrival of autumn.
International Algarve Organ Festival | Until 29 November
If you enjoy music, the International Algarve Organ Festival brings concerts to historic churches across the region, including Faro, Portimão, Loulé, Tavira, Lagoa and Lagos.
The festival begins on 30 October and continues throughout November, offering the opportunity to enjoy live organ music in some of the Algarve’s beautiful churches.
Algarve Harp Festival | 1, 15, 22 and 28 November
Another interesting musical event is the Algarve Harp Festival, with concerts taking place in Lagoa, Albufeira and Monchique.
The opening concert is scheduled for 1 November at Igreja Matriz de Lagoa, bringing together harpist Rebeca Csalog and organist Ricardo Toste.

MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix – Portimão | 20–22 November
One of the biggest international sporting events in the Algarve returns to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.
The Portuguese MotoGP Grand Prix attracts riders, teams and fans from around the world, bringing plenty of activity to the region outside the summer tourist season.
Monchique Walking Festival | 27–29 November
For those who prefer outdoor activities, the Monchique Walking Festival offers guided walks through the Serra de Monchique, along with workshops, yoga, family activities and cultural experiences.

This year’s programme focuses on water, making it an interesting way to learn more about the region’s natural environment.
Beginning of December
Christmas markets and festive celebrations – Across the Algarve
As November comes to an end, the Algarve slowly starts preparing for Christmas, with towns decorating their streets and organising markets, concerts and activities for families.
One of the first confirmed events is the Vale do Lobo Christmas Market, taking place on 5 and 6 December, with gifts, crafts, decorations and regional food.
Monchique will also have its Christmas programme from 1 December, bringing festive entertainment to the mountain town.
Estátuas Vivas no Natal – Lagoa | 11–12 December
One of the more unusual Christmas events in the Algarve returns to Lagoa, where living statues take over Rua 25 de Abril.
Performers dressed as different characters remain almost completely still, creating an outdoor exhibition that visitors can explore while walking through the town.
Christmas concerts and performances
December also brings several cultural events, including a performance of Swan Lake at Teatro Municipal António Pinheiro in Tavira on 12 December.
There are also Christmas concerts planned in Faro and Tavira, offering something different for those who enjoy music and theatre.
Although summer may be the busiest time of year in the Algarve, autumn certainly doesn't mean there is nothing happening. From traditional Portuguese fairs and outdoor festivals to Halloween celebrations and Christmas markets, there are plenty of reasons to get out and explore the region before the year comes to an end.
