Lee Westwood has been involved in plenty of controversy during his time with LIV Golf, often arguing with fans online about the merits of players joining the league in the first place.
A former DP World Tour stalwart, Westwood joined LIV Golf in the summer of 2022 and quickly became one of the league’s most outspoken cheerleaders.
However, the 53-year-old has undoubtedly regressed as a golfer since his move to LIV Golf.
Lee Westwood is obviously not the player he once was, but that is understandable at his age.
However, he has remained in the news more than most LIV Golf players due to his online presence and constant arguments with anyone who dared to question the merits of the league.
Now Westwood has received even more criticism after a statement that he made in response to suggestions that LIV golfers should be refused a straightforward DP World Tour return.
Lee Westwood makes incredibly contradictory statement
The Englishman took to his official X account on Friday and responded to a post from Scottish tour pro Ewen Ferguson urging bans for the LIV players who have slammed the DP World Tour.
“It’s an interesting position the DP World Tour finds itself in,“ Westwood admitted.
“Caught between needing “names” at those times of year when they don’t get strong fields (Jan-June), giving invites to people who have shown no interest in the tour other than now when they’ve nowhere else to play. And keeping the members happy that support the tour at the smaller events and the lads that have gone through all the qualifying stages.
“Anyone with an exemption should be free to come back because, as we know, the DPWT endorses members going to another rival tour and already have 10 cards for it, but if people don’t have an exemption they should have to go through the school like everyone else.
“And anyone that thinks the PGA Tour aren’t rivals and are partners are either blind or fools. Yes they provide funding now, but to what end and at what cost to the DPWT? The end of 2027 will be interesting as to what assets they ask for.“
However, Westwood is missing something very important here.
The Englishman seems to have forgotten the fact that he has barely supported the DP World Tour at all since leaving to join LIV Golf.
Westwood has played just two DP World Tour events since the end of the 2023 season and one of those was a major championship.
It’s also worth pointing out the elephant in the room. Westwood joined a tour which threatened the DP World Tour’s very existence back in 2022.
Lee Westwood needs to remember that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
The statement that he released on Friday was tone deaf in the extreme. Let’s not forget either that Westwood has spent the past six months laughing at and looking down on golf fans on social media who were discussing the obvious demise of LIV Golf.
Unfortunately, the Englishman hasn’t made himself any friends over the past few years and his latest statement has not done him any favors either.
