Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Public Health urged Dominicans to strengthen dengue prevention by eliminating mosquito breeding sites, properly managing stored water and seeking medical attention promptly if symptoms appear.
Health Minister Víctor Atallah emphasized the need for continued prevention at homes and in communities, despite favorable national indicators, as weather conditions could increase the risk of dengue transmission.
As of epidemiological week 39 of 2026, the Dominican Republic had recorded 396 confirmed dengue cases, including about 15 reported during the week. Authorities said cases remain within the favorable zone of the endemic corridor and below the expected threshold based on the 2019–2025 historical pattern.
The ministry also reported the circulation of the DENV-2 dengue serotype and urged residents to avoid self-medication and seek care for symptoms such as high fever. Although the national trend remains favorable, localized increases could occur.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has reported nearly 1.7 million suspected dengue cases in the Americas through epidemiological week 36. Authorities warned that weather conditions associated with El Niño could favor the reproduction of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, making continued surveillance and prevention essential.
Families are advised to keep tanks, cisterns and other water containers tightly covered; empty, scrub and clean containers weekly; remove standing water from tires, bottles, cans and flowerpots; and inspect patios, roofs and gutters after rainfall.
People who suspect they have dengue should avoid aspirin and ibuprofen because of the risk of bleeding. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) may be used for fever or pain as directed by a healthcare professional.
