TORONTO — The San Jose Sharks, on one hand, have played some of their best 5-on-5 hockey this season over the last five games.
On the other hand, they’re 1-3-1 to show for it.
That trend continued in the San Jose Sharks’ 3-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday. Mason Marchment scored the lone goal and Yaroslav Askarov turned away 28-of-30 shots.
According to Natural Stat Trick, the Sharks outchanced the Leafs at High-Danger 14-6 at 5-on-5. But they were felled by special teams, surrendering two power play goals and scoring none.
Macklin Celebrini said the Sharks aren’t playing “bad hockey”, Askarov discussed his game, Marchment talked about Tyler Toffoli, and Ryan Warsofsky gave an Alex Wennberg injury update.
A deeper game story with micro-stats from Stathletes and game action clips, Sharks Insight, will be published soon.
Mason Marchment
Marchment, on Tyler Toffoli’s pass on his goal:
I just saw him keeping it in. I just tried to stay under him and he made a great play through everyone. It was just a quick move.
Marchment, on the San Jose Sharks power play’s struggles to enter the zone:
There’s definitely some execution. They’re holding the line really strong. Sometimes, it can make it hard, but again, we just got to make better plays.
Macklin Celebrini
Celebrini, on recent #SJSharks play: "We're not playing bad hockey. We're losing one-goal games, aside from that Boston game, where we still created a lot and probably deserved better. We're in all these games, and it's just the little stuff, the details that have cost us games…

Celebrini, on the Sharks power play’s struggles to enter the zone:
It’s just sloppy. Miscommunications. Weren’t really on the same page. I think it’s gonna happen, but we gotta be better and work through it and talk to each other.
Celebrini, on if this has been a season-long issue:
I don’t think so. Like we’ve had some amazing power plays this year, where we’re getting a lot of chances and had really good chemistry. It’s just tonight was a little off.

Ryan Warsofsky
Warsofsky, on Toffoli this season:
He’s been really good. A very experienced veteran. Understands what’s going on in the game, his leadership, and then his play. He’s trying to play within our system, and he does a good job of that and understanding the game within the game.
Warsofsky, on Sam Dickinson’s recent play:
We’re seeing a big jump here in his development, in his stacking games, so that’s a good thing.
Warsofsky, on the San Jose Sharks’ power play entries:
Our power play entries this year, analytically speaking, are pretty high. I don’t think that has been an issue for the most part. Tonight, it was an issue.
Wennberg upper-body injury, left in middle of 3rd and didn’t finish game. So in question tomorrow
