When world-renowned MaXhosa Africa designer and loving pet parent, Laduma Ngxokolo, decided to create a matching knitwear piece for his dog, Madumanne, it captured hearts across the country. But behind the iconic photograph was a deeper story about matching outfits, pets and fashion, and the enduring human-animal bond.
“It was more of a matching outfit than a fashion line,” Laduma clarifies when reflecting on the special moment. “The inspiration came from the bond we share. Fashion is a form of self-expression, and I thought it would be fun to create something that reflected our connection. I had designed a cardigan for myself, and creating a matching jersey for Madumanne felt like a playful and meaningful extension of that idea. It was less about fashion and more about celebrating a relationship that brings so much joy.”
This playful gesture opened up an entirely new avenue of creative thought regarding pets and self-expression.
“It was really a fun expression of our bond,” Laduma explains. “It also opened up the idea of how much more we could do around Madumanne and pet wear in the future. There’s definitely a lot we’d love to explore in that space.”
Fashion with feeling
Behind the stylish aesthetics lies a core commitment to seeing dogs as family and practicing responsible pet parenting.
“Madumanne is much more than a pet, he is family,” says Laduma. “He has been a constant companion, bringing joy, comfort, and a unique energy into our home... Being a pet parent has shown me that self-expression extends beyond ourselves. The way we care for our pets, include them in our lives, and celebrate them says a lot about who we are.”
