The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has constituted a four-member enquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 25-year-old woman following childbirth at the institute.
According to a press release issued on Wednesday, a post-mortem examination was scheduled for the day to establish the cause of death. The committee is expected to submit its report within three working days, following which appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the findings and applicable rules and procedures.
RIMS said the matter would be examined objectively and that all concerns arising from the incident would receive due consideration.
The institute also condemned the damage to public property on its premises following the incident, stating that vandalism and destruction of public property were unacceptable and could disrupt essential healthcare services and affect patients seeking medical attention.
Acknowledging the grief and anguish of the bereaved family, RIMS said unforeseen complications during childbirth could sometimes lead to tragic outcomes despite the best efforts of doctors and healthcare personnel. It stressed that the circumstances of the death should be assessed on the basis of the enquiry and post-mortem findings rather than speculation.
The institute appealed to all concerned to maintain peace, exercise restraint and allow the established procedures to take their course.
