২১/১০/২০২৬

Olympic sprint champion Julien Alfred showed her commitment to giving back to her community when she recently visited her alma mater, Ciceron Primary School.
Alfred donated 50 copies of “Peanut and the Julien Alfred Visit” to Diverse Classroom Books, a Saint Lucian charity that works to provide schools with new, engaging and diverse children’s books.
The book, written by Saint Lucian author AL. Dawn French and commissioned by 1st National Bank, tells the story of Alfred’s sporting journey, highlighting her determination and historic achievement as Saint Lucia’s Olympic sprint champion.
Diverse Classroom Books founder Shnell Donacien said the donation held special significance for the organization.
Donacien, who hails from Choiseul but grew up in London, is a trained primary school teacher with more than 18 years of experience in education.
Throughout her career, she has held several positions, including teaching mentor, Key Stage 2 Leader, reading curriculum leader and assistant headteacher. She has worked in England, India and China, where she has spent the last eight years.
“Over the past year, we have visited more than 20 schools, beginning in Choiseul and extending to communities including Vieux Fort, Soufrière, Canaries, Blanchard and Babonneau,” Donacien said.
“We plan to distribute Julien’s books during upcoming school visits across the island.”
Donacien expressed gratitude to both 1st National Bank and Alfred for helping to advance the charity’s mission. She said the donation would introduce students to an inspiring story about a Saint Lucian role model, motivating young readers to pursue their dreams, expand their knowledge and develop a love for reading.
"We are especially pleased that Julien recognises the importance of literacy and the value of inspiring children to read," she said.
Diverse Classroom Books is encouraging Saint Lucian schools in need of book donations to get in touch, while also inviting businesses and organizations to partner with the charity to expand its programme and improve school libraries.
For Alfred, the occasion marked a different type of achievement, one defined not by speed but by the impact of her story. Through the donation of 50 books, the Olympic champion hopes to inspire young readers to believe in themselves and pursue their ambitions.
