Kenneth Roth, former executive director of Human Rights Watch, says forcibly returning Afghan migrants to Afghanistan puts them at risk of persecution and torture.
In a post on X on Wednesday, October 14, Roth wrote that France had begun “technical” talks with the Taliban on the forced return of migrants to Afghanistan.
He described the policy as dangerous, warning that the forced return of Afghans could have serious consequences for their safety and fundamental rights.
Roth stressed that the policy conflicts with France’s international human rights obligations.
Meanwhile, Fereshta Abbasi, an Afghanistan researcher at Human Rights Watch, has also said that France’s engagement with the Taliban to deport Afghan nationals marks a dangerous shift in the country’s policy.
