NEW YORK — Anthropic, the developer of the artificial intelligence model Claude, posted revenue of $16.8 billion (about 22.5 trillion won) in the third quarter. The company booked more than three times its full-year revenue from last year in a single quarter, showcasing steep growth ahead of an initial public offering planned for next month.
Anthropic disclosed the third-quarter results at a closed-door investor briefing at its San Francisco office on the 14th, according to Reuters and the Financial Times. Third-quarter revenue was about 46% higher than the $11.6 billion recorded in the second quarter and more than triple its annual revenue of $4.6 billion. The company also turned a profit in the third quarter on an adjusted basis, excluding one-time costs.
Reuters projected that Anthropic would move ahead with its IPO after the U.S. midterm elections on the 3rd of next month, based on those results. According to Bloomberg, Anthropic is pursuing a plan to begin share trading before the 26th, the Thanksgiving holiday. Reuters said Anthropic is seeking to convince investors that its striking revenue growth can offset the enormous costs of building and operating AI systems.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Chief Executive Dario Amodei, who left OpenAI in opposition to that company's pursuit of profit, together with his sister, President Daniela Amodei. Anthropic confidentially submitted a draft registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on June 1 of this year. In a Series H funding round in May, Anthropic was valued at $965 billion, surpassing the $852 billion valuation that ChatGPT developer OpenAI recorded in March. Anthropic wants the IPO market to value it at more than $2 trillion, pointing to the strength of its Claude AI model. Anthropic has invested more than $518 billion in cloud services, computing and infrastructure to date, according to Reuters.
