The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is procuring a blockchain-based tracking system to improve gold traceability, strengthen responsible sourcing and curb illegal trading and smuggling.
Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi said a national competitive tendering process for the system was underway and would be concluded before the end of 2026.
The system is expected to establish a verifiable record of gold from its legitimate source through the various stages of the aggregation and supply chain.
Speaking at the African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion 2026, Mr Gyamfi said traceability was essential to sustaining the gains made through reforms in the gold trade.
He explained that the system would help establish the lawful origin of gold and provide assurance that its production, trading and export complied with applicable laws and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines.
“The emerging success story of the GoldBod brings to the fore an equally important responsibility; the responsibility to ensure that the gold it trades is responsibly mined and sourced,” he said.
Mr Gyamfi added that the proposed system would improve accountability and make illegal and irresponsible mining less attractive in the medium term.
