The Brighton Beckham! Premier League star scores INCREDIBLE goal from the halfway line, 30 years on from when David did the same

Brighton star Diego Gomez channelled his inner David Beckham with a remarkable goal from the halfway line against Crystal Palace.

His strike, a goal of the season contender from 51 yards, helped move Brighton up to second in the Premier League in a thumping first-half performance which saw them go 3-0 up.

Paraguay international Gomez, 23, took control of the ball inside his own half and turned, taking aim from the halfway line to beat Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez with a right-footed shot.

Brighton had already taken the lead in the fourth minute thanks to an own goal by Jaydee Canvot, and by the 10th they were 3-0 up after Yasin Ayari got on the scoresheet.

Holding on to victory would see Brighton go second behind Manchester City, who have a flawless record but are in limbo after being found guilty of financial rule breaks.

Ironically, Gomez used to play for the Beckham-owned Inter Miami - and his effort was reminiscent of the long-range scorcher scored by the former Manchester United man against Wimbledon in 1996.

His goal has already been making headlines in the United States, where David and his wife Victoria share a waterfront Miami property.

'Would you look at that! Diego Gomez with a goal that the Brighton fans will never forget,' purred Sky Sports commentator Bill Leslie.

'It didn't seem possible, it shouldn't have been possible. It's just become a glorious Brighton reality.

Palace custodian Benitez went pale as Brighton's team wheeled away in celebration with Gomez, who geed up the crowd and kissed the badge on his shirt.

It is the longest-range goal in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney stunned the crowd from 58 yards as Everton thrashed West Ham 4-0 in November 2017. That day, Rooney bagged a hat-trick.

Gomez has become an important player for Brighton, who he debuted for in January last year, and scored 10 goals in all competitions last season.

This is not the first time he has scored a 'worldie'. Against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup last season, he netted four times, including a half-volley from around 35 yards out.

He is also a significant star for Paraguay, who he helped to the last 16 of the World Cup over the summer.

While more of a box-to-box midfielder than a flair player, perhaps it is no surprise he has a dash of magic in his locker after previously being team-mates with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Brighton are making a habit of blockbuster strikes, with Lewis Dunk having won goal of the month against for his spectacular effort against Coventry in September.
