Former BJP MLA Atar Singh Bhadana died after he was allegedly attacked with sticks and stones by a group of villagers during a dispute over the reopening of a stone crusher in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, police said on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday night when Bhadana visited the crusher site in Bhonda village. His associate, Gagan Sharma, was also seriously injured in the clash.
Circle Officer (Bhusawar) Neeraj Bhardwaj said the dispute between Bhadana and local villagers over the crusher had been simmering for some time.
Both men were initially taken to a hospital in Weir. Bhadana was later referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur, where he died during treatment. Sharma was referred to a hospital in Bharatpur, Bhardwaj said.
According to police, villagers had accused Bhadana of encroaching on grazing land and engaging in illegal mining. The stone crusher had been shut for around a year, and efforts to restart operations had triggered fresh tensions.
Villagers claimed they had been staging a peaceful protest for the past 10 to 15 days against the proposed reopening of the crusher. They alleged that Bhadana arrived at the site on Sunday evening with around 40 to 50 people and tried to remove them from the protest site, leading to a confrontation.
Police said both sides have accused each other of assault. Additional personnel have been deployed in the village to maintain law and order. Bhadana’s body has been kept in the mortuary for a postmortem, Bhardwaj said.
