Replacement Aircraft Departs for Da Nang Nearly Six Hours Late A Korean Air passenger plane bound for Da Nang, Vietnam, carrying 146 passengers made an emergency return to Busan shortly after takeoff due to a technical issue involving the engine system. The decision was made with safety as the top priority, but passengers experienced the inconvenience of departing for their destination nearly six hours later than scheduled.
According to Korean Air, an abnormal signal in the engine system was detected on Flight KE2093 to Da Nang after it took off from Gimhae International Airport at about 10:22 a.m. on Oct. 15. After recognizing the possibility of an aircraft defect, the pilot immediately notified air traffic control authorities and began return procedures.
Rather than landing immediately, the aircraft circled over waters off Geoje in South Gyeongsang Province to reduce the plane’s weight. In effect, it consumed part of its onboard fuel in the air to reach a weight that would allow for a safe landing. After completing preparations, the passenger plane landed safely at Gimhae Airport, its original departure point.
At the time, 146 passengers were on board, and no casualties or other unexpected incidents occurred during the return. However, it was understood that some passengers complained of anxiety during the sudden decision to turn back and the wait for landing.
Immediately after the return, Korean Air began a detailed inspection and urgently deployed a replacement aircraft of the same type to minimize passenger inconvenience. After waiting at the airport, passengers departed for Da Nang again at about 4 p.m., around six hours later than the original departure time.
A Korean Air official said the airline provided appropriate compensation to passengers for the delay and stressed that it would further strengthen its inspection system to ensure safe aircraft operations. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and aviation authorities plan to continue a detailed investigation of the aircraft to determine the exact cause of the engine warning signal.
