BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has strongly condemned the alleged harassment of Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus by activists of the banned Awami League at John F Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York.
In a statement issued on Wednesday (14 October), Rizvi said followers of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina had attempted to harass Yunus, the former chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government.
He described the incident as evidence of the Awami League’s lack of remorse and continuation of what he called anti-national activities.
Rizvi said Yunus had been targeted because he took charge of the interim government following the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
Calling Yunus a Nobel laureate and internationally renowned figure, Rizvi said the alleged misconduct at JFK airport had tarnished Bangladesh’s image internationally.
Referring to allegations of enforced disappearances, killings and secret assassinations during the Awami League’s rule, the BNP leader said associates of the ousted government remained active at home and abroad.
He alleged that Hasina continued to pursue a politics of vengeance by inciting supporters and encouraging terrorist activities in Bangladesh.
The acting secretary general reiterated his strong condemnation and protest over the alleged incident.
