(ANSA) - ROME, 12 OTT - Matteo Salvini on Monday stood down as right-wing League leader in a formality in order to run for the leadership again and be re-elected.
Salvini has resigned as party secretary—a formal step required by party regulations to allow him to run again at the extraordinary congress in Milan on October 24 and 25.
Consequently, the positions of deputy secretary have been vacated. Alberto Di Rubba has been appointed party commissioner to serve as acting leader until the congress takes place.
Lorenzo Fontana, Speaker of the Lower House and a League MP, will preside over the congress.
Salvini is deputy premier and transport minister. (ANSA).
