Collison's casual podcast claim is the most significant data point about agent commerce adoption — and the most opaque. Stripe has the best view of the market and is not sharing it.
“It only as of September basically started going vertical.” That is how Stripe president John Collison described the company’s agentic commerce activity during an October 12 episode of the Cheeky Pint podcast, which he hosts. The claim arrived casually, buried in a conversation with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Meta’s chief AI officer Alexandr Wang about Muse Wonder and personal AI agents. No volume figures followed.
The infrastructure behind that claim is real. At its Sessions event in April 2026, Stripe announced 288 products focused on agentic commerce infrastructure — Link Wallets for Agents, shared payment tokens, an Agentic Commerce Suite covering OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, and Google. Two months later, Stripe agreed to acquire OpenRouter for $7.5 billion, a model gateway routing more than 10 trillion tokens a day across 400-plus models from 80-plus providers. The company now sits at both the payments layer and the model-routing layer.
Collison attributed the September inflection to a specific catalyst: the consumer launch of Muse, which reached 2.18 million daily active users by October 5. Muse handles purchases via Link by Stripe and Shopify Shop Pay. Collison identified the unlock plainly: “Computer use was the last big unlock that we needed to make it happen, because now you can ask your muse to buy anything, more or less.” Alexandr Wang added that Muse represents “one of the first products where people are fully delegating purchases to the agents.”
Stripe has been here before, with less impressive results. In September 2025, the company launched Instant Checkout with OpenAI, embedding purchasing directly inside ChatGPT. By March 2026, the in-chat flow was retired. Sales from the roughly dozen Shopify merchants that went live came in near zero, according to reporting at the time. The protocol survived, rescoped toward larger integrated retailers, but the checkout surface — the part where money actually moves — did not hold.
The gap between what Stripe knows and what it reveals is the operative question. Collison has more comprehensive data on agentic commerce transactions than anyone in the market. His merchant base spans millions of businesses. His company now routes the token traffic that powers the agents doing the shopping. When he says activity “started going vertical,” he is reading a dashboard nobody else can see.
The broader market has not caught up to that dashboard. Only 14% of consumers trust AI to execute purchases without manual verification, according to Product.ai data from April 2026. On the merchant side, 93% believe AI or agent providers should bear the financial loss when an agent makes an incorrect purchase, per PYMNTS Intelligence in September. The identity-first, money-later pattern that has defined every new agent protocol this year — from PAP to Visa TAP to UCP — reflects that hesitancy. The money layer remains the part nobody wants to claim.
Zuckerberg offered one concrete signal during the podcast: “Way more businesses are calling us asking to integrate deeply, and very few really who have tried to block it.” But integration demand and transaction volume are different things. A merchant agreeing to let Muse access its catalog is not the same as an agent clearing a real purchase with real settlement. The Chain of Trust demo proved the plumbing exists end-to-end; it also proved the payment layer is still running in Stripe’s test mode.
Stripe’s “vertical” claim may well be accurate. The company has the infrastructure, the merchant base, and now the OpenRouter vantage point to see agent traffic that nobody else can observe. But a platform CEO describing his own platform’s growth curve, on a podcast he hosts, without disclosing a single number, is not verification. It is a signal from the best-positioned observer in the market, delivered in the least falsifiable way possible. Until the numbers surface, the claim sits exactly where Stripe seems to want it: impressive enough to shape the narrative, opaque enough to resist scrutiny.
