A Dhaka court has sentenced Abhiur Rahman Khan, managing director of Apple Global Tel Communications Ltd, and its chairman, Mohi Uddin Majumder, to prison in a money laundering case.
Judge Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 delivered the two separate verdicts today (19 October), confirmed ACC Prosecutor Mohammad Zahirul Islam.
Under Section 4(2) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, the court sentenced each convict to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Tk926.75 crore, double the Tk463.37 crore involved in the offence.
The court ordered that, in default of payment of the fine, each convict would serve an additional year of simple imprisonment.
Under Section 409 of the Penal Code, the court also sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment each for criminal breach of trust and imposed a fine of Tk10 lakh each, with an additional year of simple imprisonment in default of payment.
The sentences will run concurrently, meaning the convicts will serve 12 years in prison.
The verdict further states that if the convicts fail to pay the fine of Tk926.75 crore, their movable and immovable properties will be confiscated in favour of the state.
Both accused were absconding when the verdict was delivered.
The court issued warrants for their arrest and the execution of their sentences.
Earlier, the ACC and the defence concluded their arguments on 5 October. The court initially scheduled the verdict for 14 October but later deferred it to today.
ACC Director Jalal Uddin Ahmad filed the case on 23 February 2022, alleging that the company laundered $60.18 million, equivalent to Tk463.37 crore, earned through international incoming calls under the guise of service exports.
The allegation was that the money was not repatriated to Bangladesh despite the country's financial interests in the revenue generated.
After completing the investigation, Jalal Uddin Ahmad submitted a charge sheet against the two accused on 25 March 2025. The court subsequently framed charges and began the trial.
During the trial, the court recorded testimony from seven of the eight witnesses.
