New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has challenged Tom Brady to prove he could still play in the NFL, questioning whether the seven-time Super Bowl champion could return from retirement and immediately perform at a high level.
Brady retired in 2023 after 23 seasons in the league, although recent comments about exploring a potential return have reignited speculation about whether he could ever put on a helmet again.
Harbaugh has other quarterback concerns to address, having named J.J. McCarthy as the Giants’ starter after Jameis Winston struggled against the New Orleans Saints.
John Harbaugh doubts Tom Brady could return to NFL action
Speaking to reporters, Harbaugh made it clear that he was not convinced Brady could simply return to the field and compete straight away.
He said: “If Tom Brady decided he wanted to come back from retirement, and he actually could, which I doubt for one second he could, no matter what he thinks, you heard me Tom, I don’t think he’d be ready the first week.”
Harbaugh’s comments were a playful challenge to Brady, but they also highlighted the physical demands of returning to the NFL after several years away from competitive football.
Brady announced his retirement in 2023 and has since moved into broadcasting with FOX. He has also expressed satisfaction with life away from the game, despite admitting that he has explored the possibility of returning.
Speaking while promoting a World Cup advertising campaign, Brady said: “I actually have inquired, and they don’t like that idea very much. We explored a lot of different things, and I’m very happily retired. Let me just say that, too.”
His biographer Lars Anderson has suggested that Brady may still wish he had won an eighth Super Bowl ring.
Anderson said: “I think he wishes he got number eight. I think he wishes circumstances could have been different and he could have kept playing.”
There is also a potential obstacle beyond Brady’s fitness. NFL rules restrict minority owners from playing for teams unless they are directly related to the principal owner, creating another barrier to a comeback.
For now, Brady remains in the FOX broadcast booth, while Harbaugh prepares McCarthy for his first start of the season. The Giants coach may have issued a public challenge, but Brady has given little indication that he intends to return to the NFL.
His comments about being happy in retirement suggest that, for now, his playing career is behind him.
