Lane Kiffin knew exactly what quarterback Sam Leavitt needed to do for the LSU Tigers to get their latest win, and he shared it after they beat Auburn.
LSU finally put together the kind of offensive performance Lane Kiffin has likely been looking for, beating Auburn 38-17. Sam Leavitt led the way with four total touchdowns and 387 passing yards, as the Tigers took a 31-10 lead into halftime and never looked back.
Wide receiver Jackson Harris had himself a game, finishing with 178 receiving yards and two touchdowns. It was a comfortable victory from the jump, and one that Lane Kiffin knew exactly what his quarterback had to do to achieve.
Lane Kiffin reveals his ‘take care of the ball’ advice to quarterback Sam Leavitt which led to the win
Turning the ball over has been one of Leavitt’s biggest issues this season. He has already thrown eight interceptions this year, which has been a big problem for LSU. The team could have boasted an even better record than their current 6-2 showing.
Kiffin spoke after the game about how that needed to be addressed to secure the win against Auburn. He revealed exactly what he told his quarterback.
“I just told him that this was a game, you guys heard me say before, when I feel a game early that, ‘OK, we’re really going to dominate this game if we don’t screw up,’ I say that a lot to the players and to the quarterback especially,” Kiffin said.
“‘OK, hey, this is going to be a take-care-of-the-ball game,’ because we’re playing really well on the other side and we’ve got really good matchups. So he really played really well.”
Leavitt had no turnovers against Auburn, which made a world of difference for the team. If he can continue to play like this, then Kiffin and the Tigers might just end up surprising some people this season.
