On Thursday October 8, one of Africa’s most audacious media moguls, Mosunmola Abudu fondly called ‘Mo Abudu’ opened the doors of her new venture, EbonyLife Place London, to guests including Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London. At the heart of this cultural hub, located on Wandsworth Road, South-West London, is an Armani Auditorium, a 160-seat boutique cinema dedicated exclusively to a year-round screening of African and Black films, alongside masterclasses, panels, and live performances.
The EbonyLife Place London is more than a cinema. The multi-storey venue is an upscale lifestyle hub bringing together art, music, food, film and fashion under one roof in London. The complex has Maji Concession & Bar, a vibrant space for popcorn, cocktails and drinks; Fèhìntí Lounge, a Nigerian restaurant; Zuri, a fast fashion retail space showcasing African and diaspora designers; and walls lined with African diaspora artwork.
Mo is incredibly proud of her Nigerian roots, but her vision extends across Africa and the global Black diaspora. She said: “We want to provide a platform for outstanding creativity and storytelling, whether it comes from Lagos, London, Accra, Kingston, New York or elsewhere in the world.”
To many of Mo’s friends and associates, this is a masterstroke and they have been over the moon over this milestone. Among those friends of this Forbes-rated entrepreneur is Mrs. Bola Tinubu, a top corporate lawyer and social entrepreneur.
Bola, the elegant wife of energy tycoon Jubril Adewale Tinubu, was among the eminent guests at the London opening. She believes some accomplishments deserve more than a passing compliment, instead, a standing ovation especially when the woman being celebrated is one that has taken an African dream to an international stage. In the case of Mo, Bola said it’s a moment to celebrate courage, creativity and the uncommon determination of a woman who has consistently refused to be confined by borders or conventional expectations. She went ahead to deliver a heartfelt tribute to the media mogul, celebrating her latest achievement as another defining moment for African enterprise and the growing global influence of African women.
