Over the past five years, the Roads Authority has delivered road construction and maintenance works valued at approximately N$16.5 billion.
Of this amount, local contractors executed works valued at approximately N$9.25 billion, representing 56.06%, while foreign contractors and Namibian–foreign joint ventures executed works valued at approximately N$7.25 billion, representing 43.94%.
Roads Authority’s board of directors’ chairperson, Martins Kambulu, reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to the Namibian nation to developing and maintaining a road network that meets the needs of the country’s citizens and economy.
“These figures demonstrate the important role that the road infrastructure programme plays in creating opportunities for local contractors, employment and skills development. We also remain committed to implementing projects fairly, transparently and accountably, in accordance with applicable procurement laws and regulations,” Kambulu concluded.
Meanwhile, with the Erongo region being a region of vast distances and heavy logistical demands, significant progress on key corridors has taken place over the past year. This includes the N$1 billion Swakopmund–Henties Bay–Uis road, which is 86% complete. Work on the remaining section of the Swakopmund–Walvis Bay dual carriageway is also advancing steadily. Meanwhile, road fatalities in the Erongo region recorded a 32% increase in road fatalities by mid-2026. Many of these tragic incidents occurred along the main transport corridor linking Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Arandis, Usakos, and Karibib. Karibib constituency councillor and Erongo Regional Council chairperson, Lazarus Kanelombe, said road safety rests with every road user.
“The Namibian government cannot invest in roads only for them to become corridors of tragedy and mourning. The responsibility for safer roads does not rest solely with engineers and contractors,” he said. “Reckless driving, speeding, impaired driving, and particularly the growing number of heavy vehicle accidents during nighttime operations must come to an end.”
The regional councillor urged law enforcement agencies to intensify road safety interventions and ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations. -akaure@nepc.com.na
